Communication breakdown at Marlins Park:

With James Shields in a bit of a 7th-inning jam Sunday, there was an apparent communication breakdown at Marlins Park.

Joe Maddon had to ask home-plate umpire Chad Fairchild to momentarily stop play, because the phone to the Rays bullpen wasn’t functioning properly.

Tampa Bay’s skipper had reserve infielder Will Rhymes hop over the dugout screen and jog down to the bullpen in right-center field to deliver the message the old-fashioned way.

Apparently, no homing pigeons were available and Marlins Park forbids the use of smoke signals while the roof is closed.

Who needs a working bullpen phone when you’ve got an eager Will Rhymes?
